Pain and pain management is a complex area of medicine. There are numerous treatment options from medication and therapies to mind-body techniques. Pain can be treated with over-the-counter medicine if it is a milder form, or stronger medications such as muscle relaxants, anti-anxiety drugs, antidepressants, strong painkillers or steroid injections at the site of pain. Other methods of pain management may include surgical implants, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation therapy (TENS), bioelectric therapy, physical therapy, exercise, psychological treatment and alternative therapies such as acupuncture, chiropractic treatment and massage. Anesthesia is a way to control pain during surgery or a procedure by using medicine called anesthetics. During labor and childbirth, local anesthesia, an epidural or general anesthesia might be used.
